    Stock market random forest-text mining system mining critical indicators of stock market movements

    Stock Market (SM) is believed to be a significant sector of a free market economy as it plays a crucial role in the growth of commerce and industry of a country. The increasing importance of SMs and their direct influence on economy were the main reasons for analysing SM movements. The need to determine early warning indicators for SM crisis has been the focus of study by many economists and politicians. Whilst most research into the identification of these critical indicators applied data mining to uncover hidden knowledge, very few attempted to adopt a text mining approach. This paper demonstrates how text mining combined with Random Forest algorithm can offer a novel approach to the extraction of critical indicators, and classification of related news articles. The findings of this study extend the current classification of critical indicators from three to eight classes; it also show that Random Forest can outperform other classifiers and produce high accuracy

    Barriers and challenges in adopting Saudi telemedicine network: The perceptions of decision makers of healthcare facilities in Saudi Arabia

    Summary Despite emerging evidence about the benefits of telemedicine, there are still many barriers and challenges to its adoption. Its adoption is often cited as a failed project because 75% of them are abandoned or ‘failed outright’ and this percentage increases to 90% in developing countries. The literature has clarified that there is neither one-size-fit-all framework nor best-practice solution for all ICT innovations or for all countries. Barriers and challenges in adopting and implementing one ICT innovation in a given country/organisation may not be similar – not for the same ICT innovation in another country/organisation nor for another ICT innovation in the same country/organisation. To the best of our knowledge, no comprehensive scientific study has investigated these challenges and barriers in all Healthcare Facilities (HCFs) across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). This research, which is undertaken based on the Saudi Telemedicine Network roadmap and in collaboration with the Saudi Ministry of Health (MOH), is aimed at identifying the principle predictive challenges and barriers in the context of the KSA, and understanding the perspective of the decision makers of each HCF type, sector, and location. Three theories are used to underpin this research: the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), the Technology–Organisation–Environment (TOE) theoretical framework, and the Evaluating Telemedicine Systems Success Model (ETSSM). This study applies a three-sequential-phase approach by using three mixed methods (i.e., literature review, interviews, and questionnaires) in order to utilise the source triangulation and the data comparison analysis technique. The findings of this study show that the top three influential barriers to adopt and implement telemedicine by the HCF decision makers are: (i) the availability of adequate sustainable financial support to implement, operate, and maintain the telemedicine system, (ii) ensuring conformity of telemedicine services with core mission, vision, needs and constraints of the HCF, and (iii) the reimbursement for telemedicine services.     Orexin in the chicken hypothalamus: immunocytochemical localisation and comparison of mRNA concentrations during the day and night, and after chronic food restriction

    In mammals Orexin-A and -B are neuropeptides involved in the hypothalamic regulation of diverse physiological functions including food intake and the sleep-wake cycle. This generalisation was investigated in meat-(broiler) and layer-type juvenile domestic chickens by immunocytochemical localisation of orexin A/B in the hypothalamus, and by measurements of hypothalamic hypocretin mRNA which encodes for orexin A/B after chronic food restriction, and during the sleep-wake cycle. Orexin immunoreactive fibres were observed throughout the hypothalamus with cell bodies in and around the paraventricular nucleus. No differences were observed in the pattern of immunoreactivity using anti- human orexin-A, or -B antisera. The amount of hypothalamic hypocretin mRNA in food -restricted broilers was higher than in broilers fed ad libitum, but the same as in layer- type hens fed ad libitum. Hypothalamic hypocretin mRNA was increased (Po0.01) in 12-week-old broilers fed 25% of their ad libitum intake between 6–12 weeks of age. No difference in hypothalamic hypocretin mRNA was seen in 12-week-old layer- type hens when they were awake (1–2 h after lights on) or sleeping (1–2 h after lights off). It is concluded that in the chicken, we could not find evidence that hypothalamic orexin plays a role in the sleep-wake cycle and it may be involved in aspects of energy balance

    The identification of novel anelloviruses with broad diversity in UK rodents

    Anelloviruses are a family of small circular ssDNA viruses with a vast genetic diversity. Human infections with the prototype anellovirus, torque teno virus (TTV), are ubiquitous and related viruses have been described in a number of other mammalian hosts. Despite over 15 years of investigation, there is still little known about the pathogenesis and possible disease associations of anellovirus infections, arising in part due to the lack of a robust cell culture system for viral replication or tractable small-animal model. We report the identification of diverse anelloviruses in several species of wild rodents. The viruses are highly prevalent in wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) and field voles (Microtus agrestis), detectable at a low frequency in bank voles (Myodes glareolus), but absent from house mice (Mus musculus). The viruses identified have a genomic organization consistent with other anelloviruses, but form two clear phylogenetic groups that are as distinct from each other as from defined genera

    Herbal supplements in the print media: communicating benefits and risks

    Background The rise in use of food supplements based on botanical ingredients (herbal supplements) is depicted as part of a trend empowering consumers to manage their day-to-day health needs, which presupposes access to clear and accurate information to make effective choices. Evidence regarding herbal supplement efficacy is extremely variable so recent regulations eliminating unsubstantiated claims about potential effects leave producers able to provide very little information about their products. Medical practitioners are rarely educated about herbal supplements and most users learn about them via word-of-mouth, allowing dangerous misconceptions to thrive, chief among them the assumption that natural products are inherently safe. Print media is prolific among the information channels still able to freely discuss herbal supplements. Method This study thematically analyses how 76 newspaper/magazine articles from the UK, Romania and Italy portray the potential risks and benefits of herbal supplements. Results Most articles referenced both risks and benefits and were factually accurate but often lacked context and impartiality. More telling was how the risks and benefits were framed in service of a chosen narrative, the paucity of authoritative information allowing journalists leeway to recontextualise herbal supplements in ways that serviced the goals and values of their specific publications and readerships. Conclusion Providing sufficient information to empower consumers should not be the responsibility of print media, instead an accessible source of objective information is required.</p
